The total number of tablets shipped in Q2 2012 was estimated by IDC at around 25 million, a growth of 66.2 percent year-on-year. Mobile Connected Devices research director Thomas Mainelli opined that Apple remained dominant in the June-ending quarter because of the success of its new iPad launch in March, and continues to grow thanks to the support of the educational sector and other vertical markets.

The second half of 2012 may see new competitors such as Google, Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) enter the rankings with the Nexus 7 and Surface tablets respectively. IDC also claimed that the sheer number of tablet options may not be good for the competition.

This was expressed by IDC Vice President for Clients and Displays Robert O’Donnell, who believes consumers may opt for Apple due to their familiarity with the iPad and possible confusion between Google and Amazon versions of the Android operating system.
