Samsung eyes 65 per cent share in tablet market

Handset maker Samsung said it expects its market share to rise to 65 per cent in the Indian tablet PC market as it expands its product portfolio during the year.

"The tablet PC market was about half a million devices last year. This year, it is estimated to be triple," Yadav said.
There has been slew of launches of tablet PCs in the last few months as companies, especially homegrown firms like Micromax, Karbonn and Zen, have introduced their devices at competitive prices.
Just as in the case of feature phones, compared to over Rs 20,000 tablet PCs from the stables of multinationals like Samsung, domestic firms have devices in the category for even less than Rs 5,000. However, the pricing is dependent on the features and devices with calling capabilities are priced
higher.
The Galaxy Note 800, which was launched last week, extends the Galaxy Note category introduced last year.
The device comes with a stylus (S Pen), a 10.1-inch display, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 5-megapixel main camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.
"India is one of the first 10 markets in the world where the Galaxy Note 800 is being launched. I expect this device in many ways to fuel the growth of the tablet market in India and help us further strengthen our market leadership in the tablet market here in India," Yadav said.

(Asus), a Taiwanese multinational computer hardware and electronics company, saw tablet shipments in the second quarter shoot up 26.2% quarter on quarter (QoQ) to 688,000 units, with market share up from 2.7% to 2.8%, ranking 4th globally, said IHS, an U.S-based market information provider.

Driven by new iPad, Apple Inc. shipped 17 million tablets during the second quarter, up 44.1% QoQ, with global market share rising to 69.6%, a new five-quarter high lead all tablet makers. Samsung Group was second after shipping 2.3 million tablets for a 9.2% market share, followed by Amazon.com, Inc. and Asus, with 4.2% and 2.8%, respectively.

A market source indicated that benefiting from the release of Nexus 7, a tablet jointly developed by Asus and Google, Asus may surpass Samsung in global market share of tablets in the third quarter.

However, an industrial analyst pointed out that Nexus 7 will not likely challenge iPad, or “Surface”, a tablet developed by Microsoft to be launched this autumn.

Nexus 7 is set to be sold before Apple’s iPad Mini and Amazon’s Kindle Fire 2, with an estimated two-million shipped in the third quarter, said a market source; so Asus is expected to adjust annual shipment goal from three to five million units.

Generally the global tablet market performed decently in the second quarter, with shipments growing from 20.3 million units in the first quarter to 24.4 million units, according to statistics from IHS.
